Why join Sigma Alpha Omega®?

To have fellowship with Christian Women!

Grow in your walk with God through sisterhood!

Serve the community and be a light on the Chico State campus!

We are the only sorority of it's kind at Chico State!

Do the sisters have a house?

We do not currently have a house.  Once we have the insurance and funds, we hope to have a sorority house.  Nevertheless, many sisters usually live together.

How much does it cost to be in Sigma Alpha Omega®?

Each semester, Candidates are asked to pay $300, Actives are asked to pay $200, and Associates are asked to pay $100.  We understand that money does not grow on trees, so our hope is that you would not turn away because of money.  We try to provide scholarship for ladies who may not otherwise have been able to join.  The Treasurer is also willing to work with each person to make a proper payment plan.  As a Candidate, dues go toward gifts from the sorority, national dues, socials, banquet/semi-formal, and retreat.

How much of a time commitment is the Candidate process?

Each Candidate is required to meet once a week with the Candidate Mentor and her Big Sister.  Some weeks may require more outside time to complete various requirements.  But the seven-week process allows enough time to complete all the requirements.

Does the sorority do community service?

We do community service projects every semester.  Sisters must attend at least one each semester.  We have served at various places, such as the Jesus Center, Salvation  Army, and local schools.  We love doing various service projects and are always up for more ideas!

What is the sorority's stance on drinking?

The sorority's national policy on alcohol consumption and use is that we are to follow the federal, state, provincial, local, and college/university policies regarding alcohol use.  Sisters who are of the legal drinking are not allowed to consume alcohol while wearing the letters of Sigma Alpha Omega®, or in any way, be promoting Sigma Alpha Omega®.  Also, no alcohol is allowed at any sorority functions.

Does the sorority have a primary denomination?

We do not have a primary denomination, but we do have a Statement of Faith.  We believe that as long as you are a Christian, and agree to all the statements regarding the Statement of Faith, you are welcome in this sorority.  The sisters attend various churches throughout Chico and we encourage everyone to find a church that is right for them.  The Statement of Faith can be found through the sidebar.

What kinds of activities does the sorority do?

We do Bible studies, socials (for everyone), sisterhoods (just for the sisters), service projects, and fundraisers for Ovarian Cancer National Alliance.  Each semester we go on a sisterhood retreat.  We have done retreats at the San Francisco Zoo,  Willits,  Apple Hill, and Paradise.  We also have a semi-formal in the fall semester and a banquet in the spring semester.  And there is a National Conference held annually the first weekend in June where National Board and delegates from each chapter attend.

Do we have a brother fraternity?

Our brother fraternity is Chi Alpha Omega.  This fraternity is not at Chico State.  However, we would love for one to form!
